During his tenure, Thomas brought the CBOT - then the world's largest exchange - into the electronic age. To position CBOT markets for the future growth, he helped the CBOT secure a business alliance with the Swiss-German futures exchange, Eurex (the largest, most reliable electronic derivatives trading system in the world). He also was an early advocate for bringing technology to the CBOT trading floors, creating an "electronic open outcry" trading environment that has made the trading pits more efficient for members, customers and all market users.
Thomas was also strong advocate in Washington for the CBOT and the U.S. futures industry to compete on a level playing field against unregulated competitors.
Before joining the Chicago Board of Trade, Thomas served in Chicago city government, as administrative assistant to the late Mayor Richard J. Daley and continuing in that role through the late Mayor Michael A. Bilandic's administration.
