Robert S. Hamada, PhD. received his Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Yale University and his MBA and PhD degrees in finance from the Sloan School at M.I.T. He joined the finance faculty at the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago in 1966, earned tenure in 1971, and is now the Edward Eagle Brown Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Finance, having retired from the faculty in 2003. While there, in addition to having received the Distinguished Service chaired professorship, he served as Dean of the school, Deputy Dean for the Faculty, Director of the Center for Research in Security Prices, and Director of the Center for International Business Education and Research. Hamada was, also, the CEO of Merchants' Exchange, an electronic derivatives (futures) exchange approved by the CFTC; an economist with Sun Oil Company; a visiting professor of finance at various universities; and a consultant to numerous businesses.
